Lantus (Insulin Glargine) Side Effects (Nuksanat)
Lantus (Insulin Glargine, 100 units/mL) is generally safe when used correctly at the prescribed dose. However, like all insulins, it can cause side effects — the most important being hypoglycaemia.
Common Side Effects (Aam Nuksanat)
- Hypoglycaemia (sweating, shakiness, confusion, hunger, palpitations)
- Injection site reactions (redness, pain, mild swelling, itching)
- Lipodystrophy (skin thickening or thinning with repeated same-site injection)
- Weight gain (common with insulin therapy)
These side effects are generally manageable. If they persist or worsen, inform your diabetologist.
Serious Side Effects (Sanjeedah Nuksanat)
- Severe hypoglycaemia — loss of consciousness, seizure — EMERGENCY (glucagon + ambulance)
- Severe allergic reaction / anaphylaxis — rash, breathing difficulty, swelling — EMERGENCY
- Severe hypokalemia — muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat — EMERGENCY
When to See a Doctor (Kab Doctor Se Milna Zaroori Hai)
- Unconsciousness or seizure — EMERGENCY: glucagon + ambulance
- Severe allergic signs — EMERGENCY
- Repeated unexplained hypoglycaemia episodes
- Injection site lumps or skin changes
- Blood sugar consistently out of target range
Warnings and Precautions (Ihtiyat)
- Always keep glucose or sugar on hand
- Beta-blockers can mask the physical signs of hypoglycaemia
- Alcohol use increases the risk of hypoglycaemia
- NEVER mix with another insulin in the same syringe
