Most coughs are caused by viral respiratory infections and resolve in 1–3 weeks. Persistent or progressive cough — especially with weight loss or blood — needs evaluation, including for tuberculosis which remains common in Pakistan.
When to see a doctor — red flags
- Cough lasting longer than 3 weeks
- Coughing up blood
- Unexplained weight loss or night sweats with cough
- Severe shortness of breath or chest pain
- Cough in someone with known TB exposure
