Lorazepam (Ativan) Uses (Fayde / Kis kaam aati hai)
Lorazepam (Ativan) is a controlled prescription Benzodiazepine class medicine manufactured by Pfizer Pakistan. All its approved uses and indications are detailed below.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Lorazepam is a controlled substance. Taking it without a doctor is dangerous both legally and for your health.
Primary Uses (Mukhya Istemal)
1. Anxiety Disorders
Lorazepam is prescribed by doctors for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and severe acute anxiety episodes. It provides a calming effect by acting on GABA receptors in the brain. It is approved for short-term use — long-term use increases the risk of dependence.
When to take: As prescribed. Only on doctor's advice.
2. Short-term Relief of Severe Anxiety
Lorazepam is a fast-acting benzodiazepine for prompt relief in acute severe anxiety or panic attacks. Use beyond the prescribed duration can cause dependence.
When to take: As prescribed. Duration is decided only by your doctor.
3. Seizures (Status Epilepticus)
Lorazepam in IV form is used for emergency management of status epilepticus. Oral tablets are used in hospital for this indication — self-use at home should not occur.
When to take: Only in a hospital/emergency setting under the supervision of trained medical staff.
4. Pre-operative Sedation
The anesthesiologist prescribes Lorazepam to sedate the patient before surgery.
When to take: In the pre-op setting on the anesthesiologist's advice.
