Xylometazoline Uses (Fayde / Kis kaam aati hai)
Xylometazoline (Otrivin) is an alpha-adrenergic agonist nasal decongestant. It temporarily constricts nasal blood vessels to open the blockage. All approved uses are detailed below.
Primary Uses (Mukhya Istemal)
- Nasal congestion — common cold: Relief from a cold-related blocked nose within 2-5 minutes
- Sinusitis: To improve nasal drainage short-term
- Allergic rhinitis (hay fever): For a limited time for acute nasal blockage
- Pre-examination decongestion: Before ENT examinations
Mechanism of Action (Kaam kaise karta hai)
Xylometazoline stimulates alpha-1 and alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the nasal mucosa — blood vessels shrink, swelling decreases, and the nasal airway opens. Effect begins within 2-5 minutes and lasts 6-8 hours.
Who Should Take It (Kin logon ke liye)
- Adults and children 6+ years for a cold-related blocked nose
- For nasal drainage facilitation in sinusitis
- For acute nasal blockage in hay fever
When NOT to Use (Kab nahi leni chahiye)
- Adult 0.1% formulation should not be used at all in children under 6 years
- In patients with heart disease, high BP, or thyroid conditions — without a doctor's advice
- With MAO inhibitors
- Continuously for more than 3-5 days
CRITICAL WARNING
Rhinitis medicamentosa: Using for more than 3-5 days causes the nasal blood vessels to develop dependency — the nose becomes even more blocked. This is "rebound congestion". If this occurs, stop xylometazoline and see your doctor.
Summary
Xylometazoline is a short-term medicine for nasal congestion (blocked nose), sinusitis, and hay fever. Always use for 3-5 consecutive days only. See your doctor if there is no relief or symptoms worsen.
