N-Acetylcysteine Sachet Side Effects (Nuksanat)
N-Acetylcysteine Sachet (Mucolator / ACC) (NAC) is very well tolerated at the OTC mucolytic dose. Serious side effects occur mainly in IV high-dose hospital settings, not at the sachet dose.
Common Side Effects (Aam Nuksanat)
- Nausea, vomiting, GI upset
- Rhinorrhoea (runny nose)
- Stomatitis
- Sulfur-like smell / taste
These side effects are usually mild. If they continue, inform your doctor.
Serious Side Effects (Sanjeedah Nuksanat)
- Anaphylactic/anaphylactoid reactions — see a doctor immediately
- Bronchospasm (inhaled NAC — asthma/reactive airways) — STOP inhaled NAC, see a doctor immediately
- Hypotension (IV route — hospital managed) — see a doctor immediately
When to See a Doctor (Kab Doctor Se Milna Zaroori Hai)
- Cough has not improved within 5-7 days — doctor evaluation necessary
- Breathing difficulty or wheeze — especially after inhaled NAC — STOP, see a doctor immediately
- Blood or purulent sputum in cough
- Cough with fever
- Severe nausea or GI symptoms that do not resolve
Warnings and Precautions (Ihtiyat)
- Use inhaled NAC with caution in asthma — sachet form is usually safe
- Take after food — reduces GI upset
- Drink plenty of water — hydration also reduces side effects and improves effectiveness
