Panadol Tablet ke Uses — Mukammal Guide
Panadol Tablet, whose active ingredient is Paracetamol, is the best-selling over-the-counter (OTC) medicine in Pakistan. Its manufacturer is GSK plc, and it is registered with DRAP. In this article, we will cover all approved uses, secondary indications, dose timing, and when to avoid Panadol in detail.
Primary Uses (Mukhya Istemal)
Headache aur Tension Pain
Tension-type headaches — which feel like pressure or tightness in the head — are best treated with Paracetamol 500mg as a worldwide first-line choice. According to the British National Formulary (BNF), a dose of 500–1000mg in adults provides effective analgesia.
Paracetamol's mechanism is that it inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandin E2 in the brain and spinal cord, which plays a role in pain sensitization. Compared to aspirin or ibuprofen, Paracetamol does not cause stomach irritation, making it a better option for those with gastric issues.
Dose: 500mg or 1000mg every 4–6 hours. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 4 grams (8 tablets of 500mg).
Fever Reduction (Bukhar)
Panadol resets body temperature by acting on the hypothalamus — specifically by activating heat loss mechanisms. It is widely used for viral infections, flu, COVID-19, and post-vaccination fever.
In Pakistan's dengue fever cases, doctors also recommend Panadol because aspirin and ibuprofen can increase the risk of bleeding in dengue.
Toothache (Daant ka Dard)
Paracetamol provides moderate pain relief for dental pain. Studies show that the ibuprofen + paracetamol combination can be even more effective than combined opioids for dental pain. However, if only Paracetamol is available, it is sufficient for temporary relief until a dentist appointment.
Muscle aur Joint Pain
Light-to-moderate musculoskeletal pain — such as:
- Post-exercise muscle soreness (DOMS)
- Mild osteoarthritis pain
- Back pain — mild cases
- Neck stiffness
Paracetamol is safe and effective for all these conditions. Both WHO and BNF consider Paracetamol the first-line analgesic for mild-to-moderate osteoarthritis.
Period Pain (Maheena Dard)
Paracetamol is used for menstrual cramps, especially for women who cannot tolerate NSAIDs (ibuprofen, mefenamic acid) or who have a history of peptic ulcer. Taking it on a regular schedule during the first 1–2 days of the period (every 4–6 hours) is more effective than PRN (as-needed) use.
Secondary Uses
Panadol is also used in these additional situations:
- Post-vaccination — for soreness and low-grade fever after COVID-19, flu, or any other vaccine
- Cold and flu — to manage symptoms (fever + body aches)
- Post-operative pain — as an adjunct alongside morphine or tramadol in hospitals
- Dental procedures — in recovery after extraction or filling
When NOT to Use Panadol (Kab nahi leni chahiye)
Paracetamol is generally safe, but should be avoided in certain situations:
- Liver disease — reduce the dose or avoid in severe hepatic impairment
- Alcohol — in regular heavy drinkers, the risk of Paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity increases
- Overdose risk — taking more than 4g in a day can cause liver damage — even accidental overdose can be life-threatening
- Other Paracetamol-containing medicines — many cold/flu combination tablets already contain Paracetamol; avoid double-dosing
