Primary Uses
- Tinea Capitis
- Tinea Corporis (body ringworm — better alternatives now available)
- Tinea Unguium (nail fungus — largely superseded by terbinafine)
- Tinea Pedis (athlete's foot — topical preferred)
Current Clinical Role (2026)
The main role of griseofulvin today is in tinea capitis in children. For most adult fungal infections, terbinafine or itraconazole are superior.
Who Should Take It
- Children with tinea capitis (scalp fungal infection)
- Patients with dermatophyte infections where oral therapy is required
- A doctor-diagnosed fungal infection with a doctor's prescription
When NOT to Use
- Pregnancy (Category X — absolutely contraindicated)
- Liver disease
- Lupus (SLE)
- Allergy to griseofulvin or penicillin
