Ipratropium Inhaler Dosage (Kaise aur Kitni Baar Use Karein)
Correct MDI technique of Ipratropium Inhaler (Atrovent) is as important as the dose itself. Poor technique = drug does not reach lungs.
Adult Dose (Baalgon ke liye — COPD)
- Dose: As prescribed — typically 2 puffs (40 mcg) per dose
- Frequency: 3-4 times daily — as prescribed by doctor
- Always follow exact prescribed dose and schedule
MDI Inhaler Technique (Step by Step)
1. Shake the canister (4–5 times) 2. Remove the mouthpiece cap 3. Breathe out FULLY 4. Seal the mouthpiece with your lips 5. Actuate and SIMULTANEOUSLY breathe in slowly (3–5 seconds) deeply — timing is critical 6. Remove the inhaler from your mouth 7. Hold your breath for 10 seconds (for maximum drug deposition) 8. Breathe out slowly 9. Wait 30–60 seconds for the 2nd puff
Spacer Device (Strongly Recommended)
Use a spacer device (aerochamber / spacer) if:
- Coordination is difficult (actuation + inhalation sync)
- Elderly patients
- Children
- In COPD a spacer significantly improves lung deposition
Eye Safety (Zaroori)
- Keep eyes CLOSED while using the inhaler
- If spray enters the eyes, an acute glaucoma emergency can occur
Missed Dose
Take it as soon as you remember. If the next dose is close, skip the missed dose. Never take a double dose.
COPD vs Acute Asthma Use
| Situation | Role |
|---|---|
| COPD maintenance | Primary bronchodilator — regular 3-4x daily |
| COPD exacerbation | Rescue use — increase dose as doctor directs |
| Acute severe asthma (hospital) | Add-on to salbutamol — NOT first-line |
Dose Summary
| Patient | Dose | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Adult (COPD) | 2 puffs (40 mcg) | 3-4 times daily — as prescribed |
| Child | As prescribed by doctor | As directed |
