Minoxidil Solution Side Effects (Nuksanat)
Minoxidil Solution (Rogaine / local brands, 2%/5%) is generally safe when used correctly at the recommended dose. However, like all medicines, it can cause side effects in some patients.
Common Side Effects (Aam Nuksanat)
- Scalp dryness and irritation at application site
- Initial paradoxical shedding — a slight increase in hair fall in the first 2-8 weeks
- Unwanted facial hair (hypertrichosis) — especially women using 5% formulation
Important note — Initial Shedding: An increase in hair fall in the first 2-8 weeks is completely normal — follicles are shifting into the growth phase. This is not treatment failure. Do not stop. It should begin to improve after 8 weeks.
These side effects are usually mild. If they persist, inform your doctor.
Serious Side Effects (Sanjeedah Nuksanat)
- Systemic absorption: hypotension (low blood pressure), tachycardia, fluid retention (swelling, weight gain); see a doctor immediately
- Severe allergic reaction — rare; see a doctor immediately
When to See a Doctor (Kab Doctor Se Milna Zaroori Hai)
- Chest pain or shortness of breath — see a doctor or go to emergency immediately
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat (tachycardia) — see a doctor immediately
- Sudden unexplained weight gain or foot swelling — see a doctor immediately
- Severe scalp irritation or allergic reaction
- No results visible after 6 months of regular use — consult a dermatologist
Warnings and Precautions (Ihtiyat)
- Do not apply more than 2ml per day — risk of systemic absorption increases
- Keep away from eyes and face
- Flammable solution — keep away from open flame
- Women: risk of facial hair with 5% — 2% is a better option
