Mometasone Cream (Hivate/Elocon) Side Effects (Nuksanat)
Mometasone Cream 0.1% (Hivate/Elocon) is safe and effective when used correctly under dermatologist supervision. However, misuse — particularly prolonged use, facial application, or use on undiagnosed fungal infections — causes serious and sometimes irreversible side effects. In Pakistan, tinea incognito from steroid misuse is a particularly important concern.
Common Side Effects (Aam Nuksanat)
- Skin atrophy (skin thinning) — reversible early on, may become permanent with prolonged use
- Telangiectasia — permanent
- Perioral dermatitis
- Hypopigmentation
- Acne-form eruption at application site
- Hypertrichosis
These side effects generally result from prolonged or incorrect use. Risk is very low with correct short-course use.
Serious Side Effects (Sanjeedah Nuksanat)
- Tinea incognito — see a dermatologist immediately; stop the cream at once if the rash is worsening or ring-shaped
- HPA axis suppression — see a doctor immediately (children, large area, prolonged use)
- Cushing's syndrome — from very extensive or prolonged use; see a doctor immediately
- Glaucoma / cataracts — from periorbital use; see an ophthalmologist immediately if there is an eye problem
- Striae (stretch marks — irreversible, especially in flexures)
When to See a Doctor (Kab Doctor Se Milna Zaroori Hai)
- Rash spreading, worsening, ring-shaped, or satellite lesions appearing under steroid use — STOP cream and see dermatologist urgently (tinea incognito)
- Skin becoming very thin or starting to tear easily
- Eye pressure, blurring (glaucoma risk with periorbital use)
- Weight gain, moon face, stretch marks — systemic absorption
- Poor growth, fatigue, or unusual features in children — HPA axis suppression
Warnings and Precautions (Ihtiyat)
- NEVER apply to untreated infections — bacteria, fungi (ringworm/tinea), or viral (herpes)
- NEVER use on face, eyelids, genitals, underarms without dermatologist guidance
- NEVER wrap treated area with plastic/occlusive dressing without doctor's advice
