Salazopyrin (Sulfasalazine) Dosage
The correct Salazopyrin dosage is necessary for safe and effective treatment. Follow slow titration and always follow your doctor's prescription.
Adult Dose
- As prescribed — started with slow titration
- To be taken in divided doses — as directed by your doctor
- Do not exceed the recommended limit
- For a missed dose: take as soon as remembered if the next dose is far; otherwise skip; never take a double dose
Starting Dose: Start with a low dose — increase gradually
Usual Dose: As prescribed by your doctor
Max Daily Dose: Do not exceed your doctor's limit — do not increase the dose on your own
Child Dose
Weight-based dose — consult a specialist paediatrician or rheumatologist
A child's dose is always decided by the doctor based on weight and age. Do not calculate the dose yourself.
How to Take
- In divided doses
- With food — reduces GI side effects
- Swallow enteric-coated tablets whole — do not chew or crush
- Maintain a habit of drinking extra water
Best Time to Take
- With food
- Same time every day — maintain the routine
With Food or Empty Stomach
- Taking with food is necessary — nausea and GI discomfort are significantly reduced. Enteric-coated formulation is also available — this also improves GI tolerance but swallow the tablet whole.
Missed Dose
Take as soon as you remember if the next dose time is far. If the time is near, skip it and follow the normal schedule. Never take a double dose — this increases the risk of GI side effects and toxicity.
Overdose
If an excess dose has been taken, contact a doctor or emergency immediately. Sulfasalazine overdose may cause nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
Monitoring Requirements
IMPORTANT: Regular monitoring is essential while taking Salazopyrin:
- FBC (Full Blood Count) — first 3 months: every 2–4 weeks; then: every 3 months
- LFTs (Liver Function Tests) — same schedule
- Do not miss any test
