Salazopyrin (Sulfasalazine) Side Effects (Nuksanat)
Salazopyrin (Sulfasalazine) is generally effective when used under medical supervision with proper monitoring. However, like all medicines, it can cause side effects in some patients — regular blood tests are mandatory.
Common Side Effects (Aam Nuksanat)
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea
- Headache, dizziness
- Skin rash
- Orange/yellow discolouration of urine, sweat, tears — HARMLESS but warn contact lens wearers
- Photosensitivity (sun sensitivity)
- Loss of appetite
These side effects are generally mild and tend to improve as the body adjusts to the medication. If they persist, inform your doctor.
Serious Side Effects (Sanjeedah Nuksanat)
- Agranulocytosis / Leucopenia / Thrombocytopenia — reduction in blood cells (BLOOD MONITORING ESSENTIAL) — see a doctor immediately
- Hepatotoxicity — liver damage (LFT monitoring) — see a doctor immediately
- Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) — severe skin blistering (sulfonamide cross-reaction — STOP drug immediately, EMERGENCY)
- Pulmonary toxicity — interstitial pneumonitis / fibrosis (breathlessness, dry cough)
- Reversible oligospermia — male infertility
When to See a Doctor (Kab Doctor Se Milna Zaroori Hai)
- STOP IMMEDIATELY and get an EMERGENCY blood test: Severe sore throat, mouth ulcers, fever, or unusual bruising (agranulocytosis)
- IMMEDIATELY: Yellow discolouration of eyes or skin (jaundice — liver)
- STOP IMMEDIATELY and go to EMERGENCY: Severe rash, blistering, skin peeling (SJS/TEN)
- IMMEDIATELY: Breathlessness or dry cough (lung damage)
MANDATORY Monitoring (Lazmi Monitoring)
The following tests are MANDATORY with Salazopyrin:
- FBC (Blood Count): First 3 months: every 2–4 weeks | Then: every 3 months
- LFTs (Liver Function): Same schedule as FBC
- Do not miss any test
