Symptom

Gout

Also called: gathiya · uric acid pain · gout attack

Gout is increasingly common in Pakistani urban men — often triggered by red meat, organ meat, beer, or sudden change in fluid intake. Acute attacks present as sudden, severe pain in a single joint (usually big toe) which is hot, red, and swollen. Treated with NSAIDs, colchicine, or steroids; recurrent gout needs urate-lowering therapy.

When to see a doctor — red flags

  • First attack — confirm diagnosis (rule out septic arthritis)
  • Joint that is hot, red, swollen WITH fever — possible septic arthritis (emergency)
  • Recurrent attacks (3+/year) — start preventive therapy
  • Tophi (visible chalky lumps) on joints/ears
  • Kidney stone history with gout
