Nitrofurantoin Capsule Side Effects (Nuksanat)
Nitrofurantoin Capsule is generally safe when taken at the correct dose as directed by a doctor. However, like any medicine, it can cause side effects in some patients.
Common Side Effects (Aam Nuksanat)
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain
- Brown or dark discolouration of urine — this is harmless, do not be alarmed — but inform your doctor in advance

Serious Side Effects (Sanjeedah Nuksanat)
- Pulmonary toxicity — see a doctor immediately
- Hepatotoxicity — liver damage, jaundice can occur — see a doctor immediately
- Peripheral neuropathy — tingling or numbness in hands or feet — see a doctor immediately
- Haemolytic anaemia — see a doctor immediately
When to See a Doctor (Kab Doctor Se Milna Zaroori Hai)
- Sudden chest pain or difficulty breathing — EMERGENCY (acute pulmonary reaction)
- Persistent dry cough lasting weeks (chronic pulmonary toxicity)
- Jaundice — skin or eyes turning yellow (hepatotoxicity)
- Tingling or numbness in hands or feet (peripheral neuropathy)
- Fever, chills, or back pain during treatment (possible kidney infection)
Warnings and Precautions (Ihtiyat)
- Do not use Nitrofurantoin Capsule if you are allergic to nitrofurantoin or any ingredient
- Avoid in G6PD deficiency (haemolysis risk)
- Avoid in renal impairment (GFR <45 mL/min)
- Brown/dark urine discolouration is harmless — warn the patient in advance
