Nitrofurantoin Capsule Uses (Fayde / Kis kaam aati hai)
Nitrofurantoin Capsule contains Nitrofurantoin as its active ingredient. It belongs to the UTI Antibiotic (Nitrofuran) class. All approved uses of Nitrofurantoin Capsule are detailed below.
Primary Uses (Mukhya Istemal)
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infection — lower UTI (urinary tract infection)
- UTI prophylaxis in recurrent cases (doctor-supervised long-term preventive use)
IMPORTANT NOTE: Nitrofurantoin is ONLY for lower UTI. It is NOT EFFECTIVE for complicated UTI, pyelonephritis (kidney infection), or bacteremia. If there is kidney pain, fever, or vomiting alongside infection — these are signs of kidney infection and a different medicine is required.
Who Should Take It (Kin logon ke liye)
- Adults with diagnosed uncomplicated lower UTI (bladder infection)
- Patients with adequate kidney function (GFR ≥45 mL/min)
- Recurrent UTI patients on doctor-supervised prophylaxis
When NOT to Use Nitrofurantoin Capsule (Kab nahi leni chahiye)
- If you are allergic to nitrofurantoin or any of its ingredients
- If kidney function is impaired (GFR below 45 mL/min)
- If you have G6PD deficiency — risk of haemolytic anaemia
- If you have complicated UTI, kidney infection (pyelonephritis), or blood infection
- During pregnancy at term (38–42 weeks) or during labour
